It’s been 30 years since the concept of ionization was first applied to air purification, and it was soon considered the gold standard; removing large particles such as pollen and dust from the air. Ten years later, NASA developed photo-catalytic ionization (creating ions by light interacting with metal surfaces) to improve the air in the Space Shuttle. In 2011, Weston Scientific’s active air technology spawned a new breakthrough in indoor air technology. This multi-patented advancement uses high energy clusters of ions and advanced Oxidation to actively seek and kill biologics. Targets include pollen, allergens, mold, mildew, bacteria and viruses. Additionally, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the air like resins, glues, paint and formaldehyde gasses are oxidized and rendered safe to humans. These high energy clusters and charged ions are delivered through the ductwork of a building or a stand-alone unit covering 5,000 square feet or more. As they float in the air through a room, they purify both the air and surfaces throughout. Many of the problems that tend to cause odors are subdued. Even VOCs like smoke and cooking odors are reduced.
